All you need to know about hair

Composition du cheveu

They can come brown, blond, chestnut and red There are thousands of them on our heads – 130,000 on average – and they tell a lot about who you are. We’re talking about your hair, of course! But do you really know what your beautiful hair is made of?

Our hair structure

You’ve probably already got at home a keratin enriched shampoo or mask. But what is keratin and why is it used in most hair care products?

Well, it’s just what 90% of our hair is made of! Keratin is a protective molecule that gives hair its strength and elasticity. It is to be found in two out of the 3 essential parts of the hair : let’s take a closer look.

Composition du cheveu : cortex - moelle - cuticule

Cortex (essentially made of keratin)

The main part of the hair, the cortex is resistant and gives hair its colour.

Marrow

This is the central part of the hair, made up of a soft substance.

Cuticule (essentially composed of keratin)

This is the protective layer of your hair; it is made up of superposed scales,  like tiles on a roof.

And that’s how your hair is alive and nice! Three distinct parts, invisible for human eye, but responsible for our overall hair appearance : their texture, thickness and colour!

And this colour determines and defines us! It has to see with  hair pigmentation .

Hair pigmentation

Here is the key word you need to remember when talking about where your hair colour comes from: Melanin! This molecule is the driving force behind hair colour. It comes in two different forms:

phéomélanine, la molécule des cheveux clairs

For those with red/blonde/light brown hair… : your body produces mainly phéomélanine.

eumélanine, la molécule des cheveux foncés

For those with dark brown / brunette / black hair… : your body produces mainly eumélanine.

The origin of this production of melanin in one form or another? It’s your parents, your grandparents, your great-grandparents, who themselves inherited it from their ancestors… In short, it’s due to genetics, there’s nothing you can change about it!

Though you cannot choose your natural colour, you can decide to change it for a while , that is dye your hair as you wish, gradually or radically, depending on the technique you choose.

With Elcea permanent hair dyes, the pigments are not modified (they are not removed and replaced by synthetic pigments). They rather are left in the cortex, at the heart of the hair, for a  a long-lasting colour.

And you, are you the one to who keep her natural colour? Or do you prefer to choose & change?

Whatever coloured or not, our hair isn’t there by chance; as well as dressing up and bringing glam to our heads, they have a real purpose.

les cheveux, protection du cerveau

They protect our brain, the most fragile organ in the human body.

les cheveux, protection de la peau

They protect our skin, scalp and ears.

les cheveux participent à a la thermorégulation

They are thermoregulating partners for our bodies.
