4 types of hair dyes
Temporary dyes
The dye pigments remain on the surface of the scales. They do not penetrate the cortex. You can go darker, opt for a flashy look, but not go lighter. Temporary dyes last until the next shampoo.
Semi-permanent dyes
The pigments remain on the surface of the scales on the hair shaft, and do not penetrate the cortex. You can go darker, but not lighter. Semi-permanent dye offers 50% coverage for grey hair, and lasts for 4 to 6 washes.
Highlight dyes
The dyes do not penetrate inside the hair shaft. This type of dye evidently stays close to the natural colour, adding highlights. It offers 50% coverage for grey hair, and lasts for 6 to 12 washes.
Permanent dyes
The pigments penetrate into the centre of the hair shaft. This dye can be used to darken or lighten the hair, and offers 100% coverage for grey hair. It lasts until the roots grow out (6-12 washes or more).
